LPG in Nigeria
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, is one of the fastest-growing energy sources in Nigeria. Beyond residential use, LPG and propane are used extensively in hospitality, food processing, manufacturing, and construction. Proper safety and storage practices are essential to protect workers, assets, and the public.
Storage Location and Setup
Proper siting of LPG storage is the foundation of safety:
- Outdoor storage: LPG cylinders and tanks should be stored outdoors in well-ventilated areas. LPG vapour is heavier than air and will accumulate in enclosed or low-lying spaces
- Separation distances: Maintain minimum distances from buildings, property boundaries, ignition sources, and other hazardous materials as specified in DPR guidelines
- Level ground: Storage areas should be on firm, level ground with good drainage away from the tanks
- Signage: Clear "No Smoking" and "Flammable Gas" signs must be posted in and around the storage area
- Fire equipment: Appropriate fire extinguishers (dry powder type) must be readily accessible
Cylinder Handling
Safe handling of LPG cylinders prevents the majority of incidents:
- Always transport cylinders in an upright position
- Never drop, drag, or roll cylinders on their side
- Use proper trolleys or handling equipment for heavy cylinders
- Check valve and seal condition before connecting
- Use only approved regulators and hoses rated for LPG service
- Replace hoses and regulators according to manufacturer recommendations
Leak Detection and Response
LPG has a distinctive odorant added for leak detection. If a leak is suspected:
- Do not operate any electrical switches, phones, or equipment
- Evacuate the area immediately
- If safe to do so, shut off the gas supply at the cylinder or tank valve
- Ventilate the area by opening doors and windows
- Call emergency services from a safe distance
- Do not re-enter the area until it has been declared safe
Regulatory Requirements
Nigerian businesses using LPG must comply with:
- Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) regulations for LPG storage and distribution
- Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) standards for cylinders and accessories
- Local fire service regulations and permits
- Insurance requirements for hazardous material storage
