Choosing the Right Refrigerant Gas for Your Application

The Refrigerant Landscape in Nigeria

Selecting the right refrigerant gas is critical for system performance, operating costs, and regulatory compliance. With the global phase-down of certain refrigerants under the Montreal Protocol, understanding your options is more important than ever.

R-22 (Chlorodifluoromethane)

R-22 has been the workhorse refrigerant for decades, used extensively in air conditioning and commercial refrigeration across Nigeria.

  • Advantages: Excellent thermodynamic properties, widely available, well-understood by technicians
  • Disadvantages: Ozone-depleting substance (ODS), subject to phase-out under the Montreal Protocol
  • Status: Production phase-down in progress globally. Still legal for servicing existing equipment in many regions
  • Best for: Servicing existing R-22 systems that cannot be economically retrofitted

R-134a (Tetrafluoroethane)

R-134a is a widely used alternative to R-12, commonly found in automotive air conditioning and medium-temperature commercial refrigeration.

  • Advantages: Zero ODP (ozone depletion potential), widely available, well-established technology
  • Disadvantages: Higher GWP (global warming potential) of 1,430, lower efficiency than R-22 in some applications
  • Best for: Automotive AC, medium-temperature commercial refrigeration, chillers

R-410A (Puron)

R-410A has become the standard for new residential and light commercial air conditioning systems.

  • Advantages: Zero ODP, higher efficiency than R-22, operates at higher pressures enabling smaller system components
  • Disadvantages: High GWP (2,088), requires systems designed for higher operating pressures, cannot be used as a drop-in replacement for R-22
  • Best for: New residential AC installations, light commercial systems

Selection Criteria

When choosing a refrigerant, consider:

  • Existing equipment: What refrigerant was the system designed for?
  • Application temperature: What evaporating and condensing temperatures are required?
  • Regulatory requirements: Is the refrigerant permitted under current Nigerian and international regulations?
  • Long-term availability: Will the refrigerant remain available for the expected life of the equipment?
  • Technician training: Are your service technicians trained and equipped for the refrigerant?
